I started blogging when I was in secondary school. It was pretty much the place where I talk about my daily life, the things I went through on a daily basis, and the games I was playing then. Those were the times when Facebook, Twitter and Instagram did not exist.
You will have haters, readers, and sometimes the occasional spammers on your tagblog. It was a crazy roller coaster ride back then, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Because back then, you wouldn't have to worry about what you write about, not so much of how people will think of you, and there were no sponsers or advertisers that monitors your blog on a regular basis. You can write whatever you want without any restrictions.
After being really inactive on my previous blog due to O levels and the transition of my dad's death, I decided to close the blog for good. But what made me wanted to start blogging again was when I stumbled upon my old blog posts while talking to a friend about Outward Bound Singapore. After the conversation, I asked myself, why did I stop?
It took me awhile to decide to reopen my blog, but I decided to shift URL as I wanted a fresh start and also grow out of my silly previous link. That's when www.sidelocket.blogspot.com happened. It took me quite awhile to decide on what to write on, It's definitely lifestyle but I wanted something more. And when I did, it was quite an unexpected one.
Before I touch on what was the other beat I decided on, I had to clarify that I was already a writer for a tech Magazine. I write about technology, do reviews, play games, test out gadgets and so on. So I get invited to most technology media events. And my decision took place during one of the events.
I was at an event launch of some new product, and there was a whole lot of technology bloggers along with other media personnel. I just so happen to sit beside the group of bloggers and made friends with a couple of them. They thought I was a tech blogger as well and asked me for my blog URL during introduction, but I cleared it up and told them I'm a writer for a tech magazine and not a tech blogger. They looked at me, amused, and randomly asked if I have a blog. I honestly told them that I'm still thinking if I should start one, and they mentioned that since I am already writing tech for the magazine, I should might as well write tech for my blog too - Be a tech blogger.
It never crossed my mind that I should be a tech blogger despite my profession. I've always worried about the conflict of interest, as I may not be able to use the same article for both platforms...but it did got me thinking after that eventful day.
After much consideration and some advice from the people around me, I decided to be a technology blogger! Because of the nature of my job, I am not able to post tech posts frequently because I would rather post it for the magazine than my blog right? So I focused mainly on lifestyle and occasionally blog about technology when I have spare time and resources.
But unlike the past, where I can write about anything and my thoughts freely, I have grown into someone who is wary of the consequences I may impose on myself if I write insensitively and crudely. Certain posts have to go through vetting because they are sponsored or are advertorials. While I try my best to write as much as I can despite the crazy schedule I have, juggling work, school, outside activities, blogging, and having a freaking life.
So there you have it, I'm a lifestyle and the occasional tech blogger. So this is how it is.
