Sony's event was at red dot museum, quite a unique place to hold a launch. There were many people there as usual, usual tech familiar faces I have seen before. Even saw Wayne and Kit there as well! Guess this event is pretty big scale since I see some other prominent tech bloggers in the crowd. The event invited many important people. Some flown in personally from japan to explain the new products they are going to launch and the changes they have made to the old products.
But what peeks my interest is the Sony VAIO DUO 11. Hybrid slider ALL IN ONE tablet. The slider tablet has emerged in the touch market along with the much anticipated Windows 8.
The all in one desktop/tablet is much debated online about the feasibility of this product, since the screen is actually the acting cover of the laptop, which sways it pretty vulnerable to scratches and cracks.
But then again, people forget the fact that it is suppose to be acting as a tablet as well. If you can handle your tablet with a protector, I dont see how this can be any different. Despite all the negative hype about this product, seeing and touching the product myself first hand has led me to believe that It was a smart move by Sony. I love it, and I'm going to explain why.
It's pretty
The most basic a consumer look at. The looks of it. I'm not talking about a geeky or techy person. I'm talking about an average consumer such as myself. We always prefer the nicer looking one. Am I not right?
It's unique
Hybrids are generally more special than the average laptops or PC. And it raises more eyebrows when you take it to class, or even to work.
It's acts like an ultrabook/tablet
Weighing only at 1.3kg, It can pull off as an ultrabook that has almost everything. A touch screen, keypad, and even the specs are similarly on par with the usual ultrabooks on the market.
The touch screen is ultra sensitive
Not that it flickers and dies everytime you move it. But when using the stylus that is provided, you can write on the exact spot of where you want it to be. Okay that sounds confusing. You know how some touch screens with stylus reacts different from where you clicked? Like a 1cm difference due to the air gap inbetween the screen the the device. For example, I want use the stylus to click on A, but sometimes for some reason it clicked B. That is because of the refraction caused by the glass layers. But Sony has decided to use something called Opti-contrast panel, which narrows the differences and allows you to write where ever you want accurately.
Lean on it anytime.
You know when writing on the tablet, how you can "rest" your palm on it cause it might disrupt your touch sensitivity? Sony has made is possible for your to rest your palm and write at the same time. Making it so much more convenient.
Cool Apps
Having a cool touch function and highly improved accuracy, you can now enjoy it with the apps developed by sony just to utilise this special factor of theirs. You can write on your "diary" or scribble lecture notes there instead of using paper. Edit photos with clearity in the strokes, all just with a touch of a finger/stylus!
The downside, was however, the battery life. Sony has estimated the battery life of this hybrid to be about 4 to 5 hours, which is definitely inefficient when it comes to taking it out as an average tablet. You can actually buy a separate battery to attach it to the tablet. But it kind of defeats the purpose of having modeled a tablet if the battery goes off while you are on the go doesn't it? This is the major concern of getting a VAIO DUO 11.
It will be available in the next few months along with windows 8 official release.
